OK, I just got off a dialogue with live chat. Fifteen minutes of mostly waiting and all they did was refer me to Trust and Safety. I sent T & S a very detailed email about all the discrepancies with this seller. I asked Live Chat how a seller could even sign in to place listings while NARU. I asked them why eBay had not pulled those listings if he was just made NARU. I asked them how someone could become NARU in 30 hours after joining and also how he could have managed to get up 35,000 listings even with an automated list program. I mentioned that a number of the listings were in the wrong categories completely (such as a compressor listed under men's shoes), and I told them my attempt to purchase a hammer brought up a message that I was blocked and not authorized to buy THAT KIND of item. I mentioned that a title search of these listings which are store listings was bringing up these store listings on the core search and that surely there were enough (keyword) HAMMER(s) that store listings should not be needed to be displayed.

They had no explanation and I could tell they were racking their brains (or whatever is up there in their skulls). I kept a print out of my conversation.

Now I am really tired!

I see. Actually, this is not an eBay listing, the problem is it's a Shopping.com listing that is showing on our site by mistake.

It is a current issue, yes, we have a bug on it. These are meant to be on shopping.com only but due to some reason are showing on eBay as well and can't be bought through the site.

There could be millions of these listings.... just go to the last page of items in any category sorted by "ending soonest" and you'll find them.

Yet another LiveHelp explanation, posted on ebaY forums, in the
"Is Ebay Creating Listings To Boost totals Look" thread,
page 28, post #1082

Note that the LiveHelp Chat states something which appears to be different than the updated explanation we see posted at AuctionBytes Blog for today, March 1st, 2008:

"Update 3/1/08: eBay spokesperson Usher Lieberman responded by email on Saturday, "This was a limited test that has run its course." I appreciate the update on a weekend and, if I learn more next week, will update this post."

All right you guys. I went to live chat today to try and see what their story was on the inflated listings. I'm going to post the transcript. I don't see how it infracts the guidlines, but in case it gets pulled and anyone else wants it, email me. This is long and kind of disjointed, but this is the way it came to me. I had to request a transcript because the copy feature wouldn't work.

Do you really trust this outfit?

 

JMO, but I believe that the response given by Mr. Lieberman is strictly a time-buying ploy. By waiting a few days, that will allow ebay to carefully craft a story around whatever gets posted by then. Maybe I should say to carefully weave an explanation. Just a random thought.

Clearly, these listings were well beyond anything resembling a legitimate test procedure. If anyone knows of any such test procedures such as claimed commonly used, please pipe up.
