CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A Charleston couple are accused of using their children in a shoplifting scheme that involved stealing goods from stores in four states, then selling the merchandise online.

Ross and Lisa Knotts are charged with mail fraud in the scheme, which prosecutors say involved the theft and resale of about $80,000 worth of items including diabetes test strips, computer printers and video games over a nine-month period starting in the spring of 2009, according to U.S. District Court documents.

The couple used their three children to shoplift from Target stores from West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, then used Lisa Knotts' eBay account to sell the merchandise, according to federal court documents.

According to an information filed, Aug. 19 2010, in federal court, they are accused of stealing merchandise from several Target stores. The filing further alleged they used their children to help steal the items. After taking the items the couple used the online auction site eBay to fence the goods, delivering them via the US Mail.

According to the federal prosecutor the Knotts used several methods to shoplift the various items. They would hide the items in their cart or stroller with the children, or they would have the children push the cart out of the store while they hid in the restroom, at other times they would have the children remove items from the store shelves and place them in the cart.

Over the nine months that the Knotts conducted their interstate theft operation, federal prosecutors believe that they stole and sold through eBay tens of thousands of dollars worth of diabetes testing strips, computer printers, and video and computer games.

The items were then sold from Charleston using Mrs. Knotts eBay account "alwaysfussin". The items were moved through more than 900 separate eBay auctions resulting in more than 900 stolen items being mailed through the Postal Service.

The family traveled to Target stores in Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio and West Virginia.

Sentencing has been tentatively set by the court for Sept. 21, 2001.

Take That ticket conman faces jail after selling £8000 of fake tickets

A SERIAL conman is facing jail after selling £8,000 of fake Take That tickets on auction site eBay.

Jason Debney, 38, pocketed cash from up to 100 fans who had dreamed of attending the sell-out show at Birminghams NEC Arena.

But the Take That followers never got their tickets for the gig leaving them out of pocket and heartbroken.

Debney, of Walsall, admitted one count of fraud when he appeared at Wolverhampton Crown Court on August 23. He will be sentenced on September 20.

Wolverhampton Crown Court heard how serial fraudster Debney had advertised scores of pairs of fake tickets on eBay after setting up an account in a false name.

He was deluged with buyers hoping to bag tickets for the much-awaited Take That concert in November 2007, which had sold out in record time.

In total, police were able to trace 11 victims who had between them lost £1,500 by purchasing the duds from Debney.

But the career criminal later admitted he had sold tickets to about 100 unwitting customers, netting him between £7,000 and £8,000.

Debney claimed he had intended to sell the tickets as "novelties" and had not set out to be dishonest.

But his eBay victims were lulled into believing they had purchased the real thing, after the fraudster sent them ticket reference and seat numbers for the NEC event.

As the date for the big gig drew closer, fans became suspicious after they failed to arrive in the post. Some contacted the NEC, only to be told their ticket numbers were non-existent.

A number who bought the fakes were able to claim compensation via the online Paypal system, or from their credit card company. But it is understood that 11 individuals, some of whom bought several tickets, still remain out of pocket.

The heartless scam is the latest in a long line of frauds committed by Debney. In October 2006 he was sentenced to 16 months in prison at Birmingham Crown Court after pleading guilty to 13 counts of theft.

And in August 2002 the conman pleaded guilty at Birmingham Crown Court to five counts of theft, four counts of obtaining property by deception and one charge of attempting to obtain property by deception. He was sentenced to 14 months jail.

Guy Dunstan, General Manager of NEC Arenas, said that he was sad to hear about the scam. "We were sorry to hear that some members of the public did not receive the tickets they thought they had purchased for the Take That Beautiful World Tour," he said.

"The NEC Group has stringent processes in place in order to protect customers from fraudulent ticket sales and actively engages with associations to combat the secondary ticketing market.

"We always advise customers to book their tickets through a reputable box office, such as The Ticket Factory which has been approved by the Society of Ticket Agents and Retailers.

"We treat activity such as this extremely seriously and we actively support the Office of Fair Tradings 'Just Tick It' campaign, which means we adhere to a strict code of practice, providing clear and transparent information about the tickets on sale."

Debney refused to comment.

More arrests in Rogers Co. Burglary Bust

CLAREMORE, Okla - Two more suspects are behind bars in connection with an alleged serial burglary ring in Rogers County.

Last week 2NEWS told you about the arrest of Jason Conrad Lewis. Rogers County Sheriffs Investigators believe he is responsible for breaking into dozen of Rogers County homes.

On Tuesday, information from his arrest led the RSCO and Tulsa County Sheriffs Deputies to a home where they found property they believe was stolen by Lewis.

When Deputies served a search warrant at the Skiatook home of Patrick and Karri Medlin, they found a house filled with stolen loot - including dozens of stolen guns, motorcycle parts, saddles and a welding machine.

The Medlin's were arrested and booked into the Tulsa County Jail for knowingly concealing stolen property.

Rogers County Sheriff Scott Walton says Tuesday's bust was the result of Lewis' arrest on August 28th.

Walton says Lewis would steal the property and the Medlin's would sell it on websites such as Ebay and GunBroker.com.

Walton says, "We know these are very active thugs that continue to victimize people, Rogers County, as well as surrounding counties and use the internet to market these items."

Even more stolen property was recovered last week from a home near Claremore where Lewis had been staying.

Several of those victims have already recovered their property. Deputies hope to be able to do the same for victims whose property was recovered on Tuesday.

Conn. man faces charges for alleged eBay scam

Salem, Conn. (WTNH) - A Salem, Connecticut man is facing charges for an alleged online scam. He's accused of selling motorcycles and cars that weren't his on eBay.

Right now we're standing in front of the home of the Salem man who state police say sold more than 245-thousand dollars worth of motorcycles and other vehicles on EBay. Those are vehicles state police say he didn't own or he never intended to deliver.

The 28-page affidavit, along with a second document, outlines an extensive investigation in which 50-year-old Rance Carli is accused of selling mostly motorcycles to a number of people -- one as far away as China -- and then never delivering them.

In some cases police say Carli refunded the money but the checks bounced.

The woman who answered the door at Carli's home on Mill Lane in Salem told News 8 she was a relative and that he wasn't home.

News 8s Tina Detelj: "Police say he was selling vehicles on EBay that didn't belong to him."

She didn't want to speak on Carli's behalf and said if he had anything to say he'd call us.

Carli is charged with six counts of 1st Degree Larceny and one count of 2nd Degree Larceny for what is considered an alleged eBay scam swindling nearly $250,000 from unsuspecting bidders.

"You're saying he's denying any wrongdoing or anything like that."

Her answer: "Positively."

Ramsgate eBay fraudster jailed again

An Ebay fraudster jailed in 2008 for hacking into email accounts is back behind bars - for doing it again.

Joe Rothfarb was said to be under financial pressures when he hijacked an account in the name of Kate Darlington.

He bought a Nintendo Wii and games being advertised on Ebay by Anthony Matcham for £449.99 in April last year.

Rothfarb appeared for sentence at Canterbury Crown Court having admitted fraud when he used Ms Darlington's account and securing unauthorised access to computer material with intent.

He was jailed for 15 months.

Prosecutor Andrew Collings said the offences were committed not long after his release from a 30 months sentence from the same court.

Then, he admitted unauthorised modification of computer material and deception by hacking into various accounts and obtaining just over £13,000.

Mr Matcham discovered he'd been duped when he checked his PayPal account to check the money had been transfered to his own account.

He had arranged with a man who called him about buying the Wii, that the caller's cousin would collect the goods and he met Rothfarb at Ramsgate station and handed the items over believing the money was in his account.

When he checked his computer the following morning he found PayPal had put a hold on the money suspecting it was a fraudulent transaction as it was an unconfirmed emailing address and the account was in the name of Kate Darlington.

She was refunded but Mr Matcham was out of pocket because PayPal would not reimburse him as he had let the items go before confirming the transaction.

He called the police who discovered Ms Darlington's Ebay and PayPal accounts had been taken over by a third party to buy goods and passwords changed.

It did not take the police long to get back to Rothfarb at Queens Road, Canterbury.

He was arrested and made full admissions saying he was under immense pressure because of a car loan he could not pay back and a £7,000 debt to his mother.

Lawrence woman guilty of selling stolen goods on eBay

KANSAS CITY, Kan.

A federal jury found a Lawrence woman guilty of selling stolen goods on eBay, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said today.

Carrie Marie Neighbors, 49, was convicted on one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, mail fraud and money laundering; 12 counts of wire fraud, and three counts of money laundering.

Prosecutors said that Neighbors operated a business called Yellow House Quality Appliances at 1904 Massachusetts Street in Lawrence. The business bought and sold items such as power tools, clothing, appliances and electronics, selling many of them on eBay.

From January 2004 through July 2006, prosecutors say, Neighbors took part in a conspiracy to purchase stolen items and sell them on eBay. Many of the items purchased were new and still in the box.

Sentencing is set for Jan. 3, 2011.

Nordstrom Employee Arrested for Sleeping at Store, Stealing Merchandise, Selling it on eBay

Skokie, Ill. - When Carlo F. Settecase, an employee of a north suburban Nordstrom's store, was found sleeping under his desk one morning, security got suspicious. And when another employee noticed thousands of dollars in merchandise missing, video images confirmed those suspicions.

According to Skokie police, Settecase, 21, a switchboard operator at the store, hid under his desk and stayed in the store after closing on Sunday, Sept. 5. He then donned dark clothing including gloves and a ski mask, and spent the next five hours wandering the store and stealing items.

Settecase, of Skokie, placed the stolen items into a mail tote and placed the tote in the mail room, according to Skokie Police Officer Tammy Jacobsen. The next day, he took the boxes out of the store, located in the Westfield Old Orchard mall.

Among the items stolen were clothing, purses, jewelry, fragrances and cosmetics, Jacobsen said, and after his arrest, Settecase "was selling the items on eaBay," she said. An eBay account in his name was found to be offering high-end cosmetics that were among the items taken from Nordstrom's.

The plan started to come apart when a cleaning crew found Settecase sleeping under his desk about 2 a.m. on Sept. 6. He explained he worked there and had nowhere else to stay. He told the same story to another employee who found him under the desk around 8 a.m.

But when an "alert" employee noticed several items missing from the store, Skokie police were called. Management told police about Settecase being in the store overnight, and under questioning, he admitted his crime, Jacobsen said.

Police later recovered of $29,296 in merchandise from his parents' home, where he lived, she said.

While Settecase's overnight spree is recorded on video, it may never be known much he got overall, Jacobsen said. "So far we have one night on video, but other items were found in his home" and it was unknown how long the scheme had been going on.

He was charged with felony retail theft and released after posting bail, she said. He is next due in court Oct. 1 in Skokie.

Missing Hickman church bell sold on eBay

Piece of Hickman history finally located in Indiana

The case of the missing Hickman church bell has come to a ringing conclusion. It was found in Indiana after being purchased on eBay.

Several area residents called the church after a story on the theft appeared in The Bee on Sept. 17. Those calls led to a thrift store, then to the eBay auction. In the end, it appeared someone with ties to the church took the heavy bell, which measures about 3 feet by 3 feet, saying he thought it was abandoned junk.

The historic bell from Hickman Community Church was cast in France and traveled by ship around Cape Horn to San Francisco, where a 12-mule wagon took it to the church in 1891.

RARE and expensive sports equipment stolen from a North-East car has been returned to its rightful owner after it was put up for sale on internet auction site eBay.

Police raided a Darlington house and recovered the two rare archery bows and accessories after the victims spotted a small piece of the gear up for sale - from a seller living in the same town.

The perpetrator, who has not been named by police, was given a caution for handling stolen goods and almost all the equipment, worth a total of £1,500, was recovered.

The equipment had been imported from America and would have been almost impossible for the victims to replace.

Investigating officer PC Amanda Holland advised the victims, a family of archery enthusiasts, to check the auction site regularly after the equipment was stolen from a car in the West End on August 22.

The victims checked the site daily and spotted a piece of equipment, identical to one of the parts stolen, on a 24-hour auction on Friday of last week.

They contacted the police, and PC Holland got in touch with eBay to access the sellers address, before obtaining a court order to raid the house.

A swoop on the seller's house in the Eastbourne area of the town, less than two miles from where the equipment was stolen, recovered all but one small part of the missing gear.

The seller was arrested, admitted to handling stolen goods, and was cautioned.

PC Holland said the case was a good example of the police working with victims and eBay to get the right result.

"It is difficult for the police to look on eBay for every single item stolen - it would take too much time. Also, the victims know exactly what they are looking for.

"I was immediately suspicious because the equipment is virtually unique, the seller was in Darlington and it was a 24-hour auction.

"People selling stolen goods on places like eBay is getting more and more common.

"I think this case sends a message to anyone thinking about selling stolen goods on eBay and also shows how we can get a good result when we all work together."

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - Federal authorities say a Rochester businessman hired thieves and sold a big assortment of their stolen goods on eBay, including comic books taken from a roughed-up dealer who later died of a heart attack.

Rico Vendetti, the owner of a tavern and a restaurant, was arrested Tuesday and charged with racketeering and transporting hundreds of thousands of dollars of stolen goods across state lines.

The 41-year-old Vendetti was charged with burglary last month in a July 5 break-in at the home of 77-year-old Homer Marciniak (mar-SIN'-ee-ak) in small-town Medina.

Police say thugs roughed up Marciniak and took his comic book collection valued at $40,000 to $100,000. He suffered a fatal heart attack later that day. Vendetti and a Rochester teenager have been charged with burglary for the break-in.
