Security Bulletin

Admin, can you make this sticky?
First I would like to tell everyone that this site, and another PayPal related site are both free from virus, spyware etc. Any claims to the contrary are pure conjecture, unsubstantiated and totally FALSE. MacAfee SiteAdvisor gives the sucks site a GREEN rating. This site is not yet rated.
All reports and ratings at SiteAdvisor are reported by the users, and rigorously verified by experts. Just the same, always examine any links on any website carefully before clicking. Your system must always be protected. A safe browser and proper tools will help protect you.

If you are getting warnings on any particular site, capture a screenshot, the logfile from your AV software or other tools, and be sure to report the website to the proper authories. (More on this later)

Let me assure you the real problem lies on the site where a warning pops up, so be sure and capture a screenshot and save any logfile from your AV software or other tools. (There is one site in particular that needs to be reported I suspect. Such dangerous sites have terrible security and disclosure records and should be to be reported to protect unsupecting consumers.) Unfortunately, the problem also may now be in your PC if you were unlucky.

These are my recommendations for helping to secure your PC. If anyone else has any, please post them here.

Be sure all your Windows patches and updates are up-to-date.
Download FF 1.505. Save it on your desktop. Get Firefox

Later, you will want AT LEAST the following extensions. Drag these links onto your desktop for now.

  • MR Tech Local Install 5.1 (Get and/or install this extension FIRST)

  • Adblock Plus 0.7.1

  • NoScript 1.1.4

  • SpoofStick 1.06 (Versions available for BOTH Internet Explorer and Firefox

  • MacAfee SiteAdvisor (Versions available for BOTH Internet Explorer and Firefox

  • (If you research these you will see the importance of them. Spoof stick is what it sounds like, an Anti-Spoof tool. These others are the ones that will block some of the PC slowing garbage at a certain site, and keep some scripts from running. SiteAdvisor, the name says it all. Mr Techs is a tool.)

Download, check for updates where possible, and install these. If you have a trojan, keylogger, bug, virus, etc, you must clean it out first before FireFox will be effective. (If you stick with IE, just get used to it. It is a fact of life with IE that malicious software can be installed without you knowledge or permission. If you plan on sticking with IE, look here)
Some recommended free spyware detectors and cleaners include:

RE: Secuity Bulletin

oops, the textarea will not fit the entire post

Make sure you are running a resident anti-virus software and do regular scans:

  • AVG - Download
  • AntiVir

If you had any pests detected it is a good idea to be ready to change all your passwords once you are back online with a safe browser and safety tools.

OK, reboot your computer now and install firefox. Install the above listed minimum extensions. Look here for some helpful info to set AdBlockPlus filters and FireFox tweaks. Run NoScript with all scripts blocked where ever possible. Look here for some recommendations, and here for more FireFox Themes and Extensions.

Finally, if you found something and cannot get rid of your bug, try these forums for help:
geekstogo.com and also here or here for instructions

Further reading can be found here on Wikipedia

Malware may be reported at any number of security related sites and forums, such MacaFee SiteAdvisor, or those mentioned above, or through your firewall and/or anti-virus software maker. Just remember, save the report or logfile, and a screenshot. If anyone catches anything, also post the info right here for us.

If anyone has anything to add to this post it here.
