Google has averted a massive campaign to fool people into visiting malicious websites crammed with malware.
The websites, which came up in results for innocuous terms such as "Christmas gifts", "infinity" and "hospice", contained software that exploited vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer.
Visitors to the booby-trapped sites faced having their computer taken over and personal data stolen.
Security experts have said that the scale of the attack is unprecedented. Criminals tricked Google, MSN and Yahoo into thinking thousands of domains were genuine and well-visited sources of information by using comment spam on blogs to push the pages up the search index rankings.
Google started to remove the websites after they had been appearing in searches for about 24 hours, although it is believed the websites are still cropping up in Yahoo and MSN Live searches.
Many of the sites appeared in results for Christmas-themed searches. Christmas gift shopping, Christmas holiday sale and holiday shopping fun were among the terms exploited, in addition to numerous variations.
"Sad to say, it's that time of year when cyber hooligans compromise innocent Web searches such as the simple phrase 'Christmas gift shopping' to serve up malicious URLs via search results," said Ivan Macalintal on the TrendLabs Malware Blog.
Oh dear!! That's not nice! Don't the "hackers" have anything better to do?
I wonder if it was a "bot" herd hacker situation?
Awhile back, the FBI raided some "hackers" and they found shelled out trailers located in weird Trailer Parks around the country with computers and stuff but no hackers anywhere to be found.
