To catch an ID thief

If youre like most Americans, you know all too well how pervasive credit card fraud is. You might have been a victim yourself. A few years ago, I got a call from my bank asking if I had charged $24,000 dollars at a store in New Zealand? I most certainly had not, but I had bought my son something on a Web site that apparently was not secure and thieves were able to obtain and use my number.

In a groundbreaking investigation a year in the making, well take you into the thieves' markets on the Internet, where your stolen credit card numbers and identity information could be for sale at this very moment. Very seldom are we able to infiltrate a criminal syndicate the way we do in the case of our investigation into identity theft and credit card fraud.

Well also show you who is involved in this multi-billion dollar fraud and well track the identity thieves all the way from the United States, through Europe and into West Africa. It was challenging, risky, but rewarding.

There are also a few light moments. As part of our investigation, we actually form an online electronics company and a delivery service so we can follow the trail of merchandise purchased with stolen credit and debit cards. We find that a number of items ordered are going to the same address and the man who lives there is re-shipping the items overseas, not knowing hes part of a criminal enterprise. In order to learn more about the operation, we invite him to the offices of CH Delivery to pick up some of the packages. Its actually an old warehouse-like building weve rigged with hidden cameras and microphones.

When the man comes in, I greet him and we start chatting. I ask him how he got into this business and he tells me it all started in an Internet chat room when he met an attractive woman named Wendy who ultimately has become his business partner. He then leans over to me and gives me a warning about chatting online and what can happen if you get caught soliciting teenage girls for sex.

Like you watch Dateline? A lot of these guys want to have sex with a 13-year-old and they show up and get caught.

Hes talking about our To Catch A Predator investigations, but he has no idea who hes really talking to. Now, Im not wearing a disguise-- just regular clothes a delivery company employee might wear: a fleece and a ball cap. He goes on to describe several scenes from our shows. Apparently hes a big fan.

As youll see, hes about to find out that were investigating a predator of a different sort and I am about to ask him to help us.

'To Catch an I.D. Thief' aired Dateline Tuesday, March 27, 8 p.m. on NBC. Click here for more on the investigation, including Web-exclusive videos, and video to the entire episode. Here are tips on protecting your identity.

As of last night while on ebay there have been 4 attempts to steal my credit card number. These attempts were caught by the security software I use. I have been unable to get the ebay web site to pay any attention, at least through their online help sites and it is impossible to get hold of a live ebay representative. What to do?

My Ebay account was hacked into and someone was selling fake Gucci purses under my account. I first became aware of this when I tried logging into my ebay account and it was locked out. I then noticed selling conformations for ended auctions in my email. I contacted Ebay and after they did some investigating they cleared my account and restored it back to 100% positive feedback. I had recieved a lot of complaints from the scammers customers saying the pursed they got were fake. I was surprised that anything was even mailed out since the crooks already got their money. One email from someone said they lived in china! I was lucky that I didn't lose any money or my identity in a worse way. I still do not know how my account was compromised.

I wish some of the other outlets would pick up on this ebay story. I know for a fact they have been emailed nearly to death.

I bet ebay has spent tonnes of $$$ keeping this all hushed.

There is a lot of identity theft on eBay, unfortunately. Also, after eBay purchased Paypal there's been lots of problems there too with ID theft. The place needs to be taken over by the FEDS. HaHa! I bet the government could get a handle on it (the mess!) if they had complete access to the place! lol

The goverment doesn't know how to handle their own ass. How do you expect them to do anything intelligent ?

Maybe if Monkeyman gets kicked out of power they may stand a chance, but until then there is only one thing a "Bush" is useful for ( at least he has an appropriate surname ).

Bud, that was taken last year at Clinic's family reunion.  That's Clinic dancing with her brother "stamp" and their kids are dancing along.

VIRUSAMONGEUS,  You are such an IDIOT!  Bush is responsible for the sucking of e-BAY??  I'm
In that case, tell MEG we want a full withdrawal of troops from Iraq.  weirdface

And Diva, Bored Poster thinks Bud makes up all these PP horror stories, cause you never hear about them on Dateline or anywhere.   He may end up looking like a real moron, if he finds out we are telling the truth.

LOL @ Bud! You ought to give a warning when you make such funny posts w/images.... I laughed so hard my cup of java spilt. **hehehe**

Love that photo of the monkeys... so appropos!!

I stand by my word, the government could do a better job running eBay if they could only get access!! ebay spoon feeds what they want the gov. to investigate. That's no secret, anymore.
