Cyber cop a term we hear more and more often. So what exactly is a cyber cop? Is this the real equivalent to a Robocop? Not exactly although perhaps they do share some similarities when it comes to man and machine.
Cyber cops are a new kind of police officer. Rather than tackling physical criminals they spend their days in cyber space dealing with crime. All kinds of crime! Fraud, identity theft, worms, viruses, sexual predators, terrorist activity, and more.
Just as there are snake oil salesmen on street corners there are snake oil salesmen on the web. As was once said a free market can only be free as long as it is fair and that is why there is legislation relating to advertising and how companies can do business.
Just as brick and mortar stores must follow the law so do web businesses and cyber law enforcement works diligently to shut the snake oil salesmen down so innocent people don’t get burned.
The internet also opens up concerns relating to the security of our personal identity. There are several things as users that we have been taught to do to help keep ourselves safe. But cyber police also work diligently to stop fraudulent use of credit cards and nail criminals who have stolen identities and then use that information to make purchases online.
Infact many large companies such as eBay have their own security personal on staff. While they employ their own staff to help stop online crime on their sites, they also work with police forces in an effort to catch criminals.
eBay has been the focus of much news coverage related to the selling of stolen merchandise and counterfeit merchandise. The question remains whether eBay could ever have enough control over stopping these types of items from being sold on their site and still maintain a viable market. The reality is not likely.
eBay itself has no way of knowing where goods puts up for action actually comes from. The best they can do is put rules in place that help reduce the risk of such merchandise and work with law enforcement whenever required.
Of course there are thousands of other sites with the potential to move stolen merchandise through their websites and there are thousands of other sites selling counterfeit merchandise such as Rolex watches that are knockoffs or designer handbags such as Louis Vuitton. Cyber cops also work to shut down this type of criminal activity.
And then there is the issue of sexual predators that we’ve come to hear so much. They tend to lurk on chat boards where youngsters and teens hang out. So cyber police have infiltrated many of these boards watching for activity and even presenting themselves as a young girl setting the predator up for a sting operation.
Cyber police will even run their own online sting operations in an effort to lure the criminal element into their web. FTC will often identify a problem area and then the cyber police will set to nab the bad guys. They also spend hours surfing the internet looking for violations such as “Get Rich Schemes.”
Those running questionable sites might get suspicious if they saw visitors that were tied to law enforcement or the government visiting their sites so cyber cops work in an undercover mode not accessing sites through their work ISP address remaining unanimous.
Terrorist groups are also known to use the internet to communicate, to raise funds through what appear to be legitimate activities, and to move funds around the globe. Cyber police are involved in this avenue of policing as well. In fact the FBI, CIA, and other intelligence agencies spend a great deal of time monitoring this criminal element.
There has always been a criminal element on the streets, in the market place, and down the street from where one lives but the internet has opened up many more opportunities mainly because of the anonymity and the inability for world wide policing outside the police forces jurisdiction. This has led to more efforts to coordinate policing across the globe.
You may not see or hear the cyber cop; in fact you may not realize they are even there. But rest assured just as there are police officers that walk the beat, patrol the neighborhood, and keep you safe, there are also cyber police officers that spend their days in cyber space patrolling the websites letting their fingers do the walking to make the internet a safer place. There is in fact a cyber cop busy in your neighborhood!
