Hello to fellow Ebay members,

My user id is katalive and I am a seller/buyer from Ebay, I have been using Ebay for approximately one year (Feb. 2006) , I had nothing but 100% positive feedback . However, yesterday I received a call from the local police station saying that I am under investigation for fraud because someone through Ebay is using my account to make fraudulent sales. The fact that someone was able to access my Ebay and Paypal accounts, change my passwords and security questions was very disturbing to me, especially considering that I have not been active on Ebay in the past 6 months.

I did not receive any emails warning me or even forwarding my Ebay activity as they used to when I was actively selling. Had it not been for the police calling me yesterday I would have been completely unaware of any of this.
The one ad I know about so far was posted on Feb. 18 for a “1937 Studebaker Dictator” and that is all I know for now. I am now in a position that I must deal with this huge mess and the police even though it is very clear to Ebay and Paypal that a third party accessed my account and pretended to be me in order to post ads and obtain money from Ebay members.
I am trying to contact people who sent messages regarding this car that was posted using my account and user ID: katalive and asking for anyone who knows anything at all to please contact me ASAP so that possibly you can help assist me trying catch these people/person and also to help spread the word to be careful.

Anything, however big or small would help me and also make Ebay a more secure place to Buy and Sell.
So please if you have some information about this please feel free to contact me at katalive@sbcglobal.net

Thank you very much,

katalive

Sounds like the police should be on your side. Have they offered any assistance avenues for you? If they're for real, you might want to consult an attorney. eBay should help you as well. They're supposed to be big on working with police in busting fraud, so they advertise. I don't know how to tell you to proceed except to report it to eBay throught he usual channels. They've never offered me any phone numbers for contact when I was in trouble. Find out what you can about the culprit and kill it, before it bites someone else. Good luck

It sounds like you have serious problems. You also need to recover your Paypal account. Can you access it?

If ebay did not remove the auction listings, they will still be available in your sold item history for the last 60 days. Also, the feedback needed page will show the sales for the last 90 days.

However, if all the scam sales were through bogus second chance offers and ebay cancelled the listings, then there will not be any way for you to look at those listings.

Since you are a seller, you can call Paypal at 888-221-1161. If the phone support people are no help, you can contact their escalation department via email at csme@paypal.com

katalive (47 ) View Listings | Report Mar-16-07 16:54 PDT 9 of 12

thank you for the paypal info but they caught it right away and are defending me it is ebay and this fake listing where many people purchased this "classic vehichle" in my name and a week ago I get a call from my local police department otherwise I would not have known even though I never received a letter from ebay...a e-mail or phone call.....although they remove the listing after about 3 weeks for TKO?

katalive (47 ) View Listings | Report Mar-16-07 17:05 PDT 10 of 12

It is just hard to believe that we are reassured and yet they can't even recover the original listing that these people/person put on and it was only 3 weeks ago....anybody have any answers or suggestions...because i have to go to police station this tuesday?

azlynn67 (0 ) View Listings | Report Mar-16-07 17:15 PDT 11 of 12

Were you given an item number that it was assigned when listed? Do you know how long it was listed?

If it was a few days and you have an item number you may be able to pull up a cached view of it by doing a Google search.

When the item was listed on your account you should have received an email. Has the email account associated with your ID been changed or could your email account have been hijacked?

katalive says: It is just hard to believe that we are reassured and yet they can't even recover the original listing that these people/person put on and it was only 3 weeks ago.

Yes, It is rather unfortunate that the listings are complete wiped out - but that just seems to be the way it is.

As AZ mentions - sometimes - with an item number - your auction can be obtained through google or yahoo cache. An exact auction title usually works much better.

The investigator should be able to get the IP information from Ebay of who has accessed your account. Since they have given your account back to you through password changes - it seems to me that Ebay has already looked and noted that someone other than you has accessed your account. (trying to ease your worries a bit).

All the information - the wiped out auctions - the IP addresses other than your - the activity on your paypal account - any usernames and addresses of victims of the fake auctions - can all be obtained through a law enforcement request. (see my next post for information to give to the officer who contacted you).

The officer can also get the same information from AOL. I have a feeling that the scammer had access to your email account. Many times they delete emails in the inbox and sent folder. You should check those folders, and the Trash folder in your email.

Also - Check your ebay "My messages" - Inbox and Sent. Messages through the ebay message system (Sent folder) cannot be deleted. If you find anything in there - come back and I'll tell you how to create a message archive.

DISCLAIMER: FREE advice - use it or NOT !

Ebay Scam Victim Loses Thousands of Dollars

By Roslyn Anderson
roslyn@wlbt.net

The old adage "Buyer Beware" holds true, especially when it comes to online purchases. A Clinton man learned an expensive lesson about shopping on Ebay.

Thirty one year old Charles Weakley has been posing these questions since he thought he'd purchased a motorcycle on Ebay.

Weakley asks, "Where did my money go, and where is my bike?"

January 26th was the first time he used Ebay.

Weakley found a 2006 Suzuki for $2,900.00.

He said the seller was Eric Berry, who he learned through exchanged emails, needed to sell the bike because he'd undergone knee surgery and was going through a divorce.

Weakley said, "I had to send the money to Spain where he was and he was going to send the bike out of Santa Cruz California. He said that his brother worked for DAS which is a shipping company for Ebay."

The retail store department manager wired over $3,000.00 through Western Union and after hearing nothing for several days, he contacted Ebay.

Weakley said, "But I still don't understand how Ebay can not be held accountable for any of this because they said he didn't have an account with them, but I have an account with them and you have to have an account with them to sell or buy."

Experts suggest that you always use Ebay messages and not their or your personal email and use paypal to pay for your purchases.

That way Ebay will be able to keep track of your transactions.

Christie White is assistant manager of It Sold Easy in Brandon.

She said, "They pretty much take the money and run once it's wired."

The company sells merchandise through Ebay and offers buyers and sellers advise on on-line purchases.

White said, "You always need to look at their feedback and make sure they at least have 95. Look at their page and make sure it looks legit that there's everything on it, a good description and stuff like that."

Weakley has contacted the Attorney General's Office who said there was nothing the state agency could do.

Ebay's website does not recommend wiring money for purchases.

Bill Moak with Mississippi's Better Business Bureau reports that Ebay has 100 million subscribers and 2,980 complaints nationwide.
