Google's 'PayPal killer' free for rest of year

SAN FRANCISCO (Marke****ch) -- Google Inc. has begun making its Google Checkout online-payment feature available for free to merchants that choose to make it a payment option on their Web sites.
The Checkout-for-free promotion runs between Wednesday and Dec. 31, taking in the holiday-shopping season, according to Google spokeswoman Megan Lamb. Typically, Google charges a fee of 20 cents per transaction and also collects 2% of the purchase price

When reached last week to comment on rumors of the pending free Checkout promotion, a PayPal spokeswoman said that the eBay division had no plans to respond with a promotion of their own. The spokeswoman had no comment Wednesday.
Introduced with great fanfare by analysts, the Checkout feature stumbled out of the gate with what many criticized as an overly strict antifraud measures that delayed processing transactions sometimes for weeks.
By offering Checkout for free, Google is adding yet another promotion to try and spur adoption of the feature, which is used by a few hundred Web sites.
Google already has a promotion in which for every $1 merchants spend on the company's AdWords advertising feature, Google will process $10 in sales for free through Checkout.
Also, some stores automatically earn a $10 bonus for every $30 in transactions they process through Checkout.
Shares of Google are up 1% to $477.60 in midday trading Wednesday. End of Story

...ahem...Ebay acceptable payment policy forbids google checkout. (Canadian Tire Money is OK though )

However, ebay has no power to police what happens after the transaction is over. Folks using google checkout are simply not mentioning it in their listings, (they simply select credit cards as payment option, which is what the consumers want) then sending an invoice, through private email, NOT sleazebay checkout or contact member system.

Of course paypal has no plans for any promotion..would you expect anything else?

Come to think of it, I believe painpal may be having a promotion of some sort right now. I cannot recall whether it was dubbed the "Bend over and hold up your wallet" special, the "Twenty dollar maka you holler", or if it was the "Hey little girl do ya want some candy" promo.

Either way, I believe it/they include painpals standard F I N E features.

I was so inspired, I wrotes me a song about it. Wanna hear it? Here it go...

I think it may lose something in the translation. I have the conceptual continuity down fairly well, but I still need to work on the melodic contrapuntal ingrediants.

I also understand that as an added convienience, they are offering the instant verification with that special too.

Oh! Imagine the joyous gleeful smiles on everyone's faces who signed up for that non FDIC, safe arrangement when they wake up some fine day to find their bank accounts drained and the responsible parties have caught the last train to Outer Bootfookistan.

Just to lazy to go look it up.
