Credit card fraud linked to PayPal, another to online dating service

Credit card fraud linked to PayPal, another to online dating service

Published: Thursday, July 10, 2008

Two area residents have been hit by debit/credit card theft and fraud in two separate incidents recently, according to Batesville authorities.

Independence County Deputy Joey Clark took a report Thursday from Kimisue Hipp of Cave City, who said someone had bought a $200 computer program from her using a stolen debit card.

She received an e-mail from PayPal telling her that a transaction she had made for the listed item (computer software) back in January had been disputed, Clark said.

She told me when she contacted PayPal, she was told the person who bought the program had used a stolen debit card and the owner of the card noticed the charge on the card and had it stopped.

Hipp told Clark that PayPal told her that if she would send them a police report, they would send her the information she needed to start legal proceedings against the person using the card.

In a similar incident, Ronald Smith of 190 Morris Ave., was notified by his credit card company that charges were made to his card for an online dating service on June 25 and 29, according to Deputy Randy Jones.

The victim said that there was one charge made on June 25 for $1 and three charges on June 29 for $49.99, $6.98, and $3, Jones said.

Smith was also told by the dating service that a police report would be required before he could receive information to start criminal proceedings.

Very likely paypal will 'never receive' the faxes or snailmail, or give the victim LE some BS runaround.  That is what they are known for.

Oh ya, in case no one has seen this yet, PP is owned by hackers!
There is a thriving market for stolen PP accounts.  There have been plenty of PP holes discovered & reported in just the last year, and there is no telling how much the hackers have gotten, but you can see the results everywhere, like wind through the trees if you look.

Not to mention the apparent employee theft of the data:

if you go here ^ and click the video info links you will see more shockers
But the one thing that runs through it all is Paypal dishonesty and dismal customer service & relations.
