EBay, the San Jose-based online consumer-products marketing site, has laid off 125 employees - about 70 of them in the Bay Area - said company spokesman Jose Mallabo.

The job cuts, which eBay announced to its workers Monday, are needed to free up finances so the company can make a number of consumer-friendly improvements to its Web site, he said. Some of the employees worked for PayPal, eBay's online payment service.

"It's more of a streamlining, particularly on the customer service front," Mallabo said.

Including the job reductions, eBay has more than 15,500 employees worldwide.

The cuts come as John Donahoe prepares to take the helm from outgoing Chief Executive Meg Whitman, who will retire March 31.

Mallabo said the reorganization is a result of putting resources into the priorities Donahoe announced with January's earnings results: merging the best assets of the Buy It Now function with the auction functions, making the site safer from fraud and growing PayPal.
