Rumors abound that Google is looking to purchase Skype

Rumors abound that Google is looking to purchase Skype

By Sean P. Aune

This is firmly in the Land of Rumors for now, but word has started circulating that Google may be sniffing around Skype.

Jemima Kiss, of pda:the digital content blog, is reporting that rumors around London are that Google is talking with eBay about purchasing Skype from them.  The worlds largest auction service purchased the Internet telephony company in October 2005 for $2.6 billion, a price that even one of the company founders thought was too much

There have been many rumors that eBay is unhappy with the performance of the VoIP system, and is unsure what to do with the company.  The original idea was to integrate Skype fully into eBay so that buyers could communicate easily with sellers, but over two years later and that ability is still only in a handful of categories.

With the recent partnership between Skype and the UK-based mobile carrier, 3, it is obvious Skype is entering the mobile phone market.  Coincidentally, Google recently announced their mobile OS, Android, and they are expected to bid in the FCCs upcoming auction for the 700MHz band.   It doesnt take a rocket scientist to see that Skype may be a better fit for Google with their other recent projects then it ever was for an auction company.

Could we be seeing the early hints of the birth of a nationwide mobile VoIP solution where one could use Skype anytime, anywhere?

Well be keeping a very watchful eye on this.

eBay Selling Skype to Google? Oh, Please, Oh, Please...

|

10:47 AM

Can it be that eBay has finally realized that its owning Skype is a ludicrous combination and is about to sell it to GOOG, MSFT, or YHOO? Boy, we eBay shareholders and Skype users sure hope so. Since the day the deal was announced, we've been praying silently that eBay would finally come to its senses and sell Skype to a company that might actually have some synergy with it.

The Guardian's Jemima Kiss is hearing rumors that eBay is selling Skype and that Google might be the buyer. We think Yahoo would be a better fit, but Skype would boost Google's communications offering tremendously, so we can imagine why Google's at the table. And if Google's at the table, Google will be the buyer.

(We trust both Google and Skype have learned their lessons from the last time Google tried to buy Skype, back when Google so offended the delicate Skype guys that they persuaded themselves they would be better off with the kind, desperate folks at eBay).

Skype has run-rate revenue of about $400 million, and we expect it could command a multiple of about 10X that. So we would expect a valuation in the $4 billion range--more if testosterone-filled Microsoft catches wind of the deal and jets into town.
