"Botmaster" admits infecting 250,000 computers

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A Los Angeles man on Friday admitted infecting 250,000 computers and stealing the identities of thousands of people by wiretapping their communications and accessing their bank accounts.

John Schiefer, 26, agreed to plead guilty to four counts of fraud and wiretap charges that could lead to a $1.75 million fine and send him to prison for up to 60 years, the Los Angeles U.S. Attorney's office said.

Prosecutors said Schiefer and an unspecified number of conspirators installed malicious computer codes that acted as a wiretap on compromised computers and intercepted messages to www.paypal.com and similar Web sites.

He retrieved usernames and passwords and used them to access an unknown number of bank accounts. Prosecutors said they were still investigating how much money was stolen and the number of victims.

They said Schiefer worked by day as an information security consultant but was a well-known "Botmaster" among the underground network of hackers skilled in so-called "botnet attacks."

A bot is a program that surreptitiously installs itself on computer so a hacker can control it. A botnet is a network of such computers that can harness their collective powers to wreak havoc.

In another scheme, Schiefer installed malicious codes on computers running Microsoft operating systems, causing them to disgorge usernames and passwords from a secure area that led him to access the victims' bank accounts.

Schiefer also admitted defrauding the Dutch Internet advertising company Simpel Internet, who signed him up as a consultant, of more than $19,000. He installed his spyware program on approximately 150,000 of the Dutch company's computers.

He is expected to be arraigned on December 3.

Do you think he may have given himself away with that nickname alone?
I mean, for instance,, did he go to company holiday parties & introduce himself as "Botmaster"?   confuse.gif

RE: "Botmaster" admits infecting 250,000 computers

There was a "video" recently made about this. There was also an FBI Video made about how "they" make their "presentations" in order to "recruit" people into their life of crime but I cannot find the link any longer on Google. It was concerning some sort of "sting" operation, however, as I recall, when the info was given out to the Media. This was years ago.

Good luck, over here, catching "the bad guys!"

Ciao

[File "clarification" edit note: "they" meaning, "Bot Masters" who are in ebiz whom the FBI investigates, in case my meaning here was not obvious! **smile** ]

Hmm... Fascinatin'

FBI in the botnet training video business?

You mean they don't spend all their time closely monitoring consumer rights related internet chat boards and related issues?

'Cause that was the last I heard, from some old "sage".

Hehehe! You funny, Bud!

I guess they have some "good" apples in the FBI who are dedicated to doing other things such as, looking for all those "bad" apples out there in Internet Land. LOL!

Great video, Bud! A "picture is worth a thousand words," for certain!

Thanks for "sharing" - although also, sometimes it's better NOT knowing about some of this dangerous stuff.
It's a creepy world we live in, huh Bud? Oh well.
Have a great nite!

Signed,
Cyber Diva

Bud, I wonder if the FBI also knows that "bot" Masters have secretaries who make "Live Phone Calls" during the day to engage in "Identity Theft?"

Yeap, they do ....... this time they called from Michigan...Not Too Bright! HeHe!

It's a "bummer" when their Caller ID "spoofs" back 'cause the authorities are on to them.

Oh well.

Just passing through....

See ya, Bud!

http://www.dailytech.com/eBay+Under+Attack+from+Giant+Botnet/article8754.htm

Side Note:

Bud, we recently had a "Street Person" who was associated with a "Bot Network" in the state of [redacted] attempt to purchase a Handmade Diamond Bracelet (Over 3K) from our store using the Identity of another which had been "captured" via the use of Bot Masters! (The details have been turned over to the authorities, and for obvious reasons, the "details" cannot be posted to this board, lol)

crash.gif This stuff is REAL. AND... BOT MASTERS RULE THE WORLD. crash.gif
Also....."Bot Masters" are NOT afraid of the FBI. The "botherders" just go further underground whenever the "heat" is turned up.

Their activity is a MAJOR threat to our economy, they are in fact: Domestic Terrorists (They used to be referred to as: Shadow Crews)

That ebay related 'Multistage complex botnet' is evolving, BTW.
It is still out there, & still ramping up right now.

eBay Web Attack Hops From Other Sites

I sure hope you are able to have that fraudster wannabe from taken care of.
Unfortunately, it seems there are years of delays involved in the world of law enforcement, even moreso where the intenet is concerned.
