Ebay Phishing Scam Hits The CBS4 Newsroom

Ebay Phishing Scam Hits The CBS4 Newsroom

DORAL (CBS4)

It looks like a real email from eBay, but you may be giving away your identity and perhaps your money to a scammer if you click the link enclosed.

"It just looked fishy," said CBS4.COM Producer Vanessa Mendoza.

She's referring to the email she received about a problem with her eBay account, because she doesn't even have an eBay account.

"It looked so real," said Mendoza. "I just ignored it, but I then realized I wasn't the only getting the email."

Several people in the CBS4 newsroom received the phony emails--a kind of identity theft called "phishing", as in fishing for personal information, but spelled with a "ph". CBS4 Personality Marybel Rodriguez and Ileana Varela herself were among the potential victims.

Professor Gerard Klonarides who teaches internet security at FIU says you can bet many other people got one. We could be talking millions.

Doctor Klonarides says the fake or spoof emails are so real-looking you're better off not trying to spot theminstead, he suggests never click on a link in an e-mail. That's how in this case hackers would have gotten your eBay password and then your personal information--pay dirt for an identity thief.

"And the worse thing is you can't change your name, dob," said Klonarides. "They get caught, go to jail, get out, and hit you again."

Klonarides also recommends a free download from spoofstick.com, which tells you if you're on the website you think you're on.

We tried it on the fake email we got, and when we clicked on the link supposed to take us to eBay, spoofstick immediately warned us that we were not in the real website.

CBS4 News called eBay to try to find out how many of its members have reported this phishing scam, however no one has returned our phone call. They did send a statement confirming the email was fake and that their company is working to disable it.

They also emphasized that you can always verify all legitimate eBay messages by checking the "my messages" section of your account.

In case anyone reads this & thinks spoofstick is something you want, you need to know this. (from by bravenet blog)

First just a quick little bit about spoofstick 1.06 extension for FireFox. It is not officially compatible with Firefox 2.0*. That which you see in my videos is my own profile hack. I "bumped" mine. Also, you may need to have your add-on compatibility checking disabled, either through extension manager or in about:config. No guarantee it actually does anything beyond displaying a large label.

Luckily, I do not rely on spoofstick for anti-phishing.  (As we have seen , FireFox 2.0* has excellent anti-phishing already built-in.) I use it strictly as a hi-vis page label. When I have any doubts about a website, I check other things of course. As you saw in the video however, the spoofstick still showed the same url as in the url/address  textarea window.

Also, most likely
Mr Tech's local install will also 'fix' spoofstick, for FF 2.0.*, but again, all it does is (for sure) make a big easy to read label.
As far as I know, spoofstick still works fine for Internet Exploder, or whatever thet other browser is called
